Archeological Museum of Chora, Messinia

The Archeological Museum of Chora, Messinia, under the responsibility of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Messinia, is located in the Municipality of Pylos-Nestoros and at a distance of approximately 4.5 km northeast of the archaeological site of Palace of Nestor, which is the best preserved Mycenaean palace in mainland Greece. The Museum of Chora, designed by the architect Patroklos Karatinos, was opened in 1967 by the Archaeological Service. It is one of the most important prehistoric museums in Greece, where the findings of excavations carried out by prominent archaeologists such as Spyridon Marinatos and Carl Blegen are exhibited.

The Archaeological Findings

The museum's exhibits are mostly dated to the Mycenaean period (about 1680-1060 B.C.), while there are also exhibits from other periods of classical antiquity.  They present diversity in terms of materials, place of origin, size and use. They come from the hill of Upper Eglianos, that there is found the Palace of Nestor as well as from particularly noteworthy places, where burial monuments have been excavated, such as Middle Helladic mounds with burial pithos, vaulted and chambered Mycenaean tombs as well as burials of the Geometric and Hellenistic era. The finds stand out from burial monuments in the positions "Peristeria", “Volimidia", "Routsi Mirsinohoriou", "Tragana", "Agios Ioannis Papoulion" and also on the Hill of Upper Eglianos..

Funding for the Griffin Warrior Hall

The Foundation of Konstantina Kolokytha Stamatelopoulos, named "Ancient Pylos", finances the design, study and construction of the hall Griffin Warrior which was found in excavations on the hill of Eglianos. The great importance of these finds for our place adds to the cultural heritage of the place and of the entire Greek Territory.

Purpose of the foundation "Ancient Pylos", is not to lose these connections with the past of our ancestors. We will make sure that projects are implemented for our homeland in the area of Ancient Pylos (Town of Messinia) that will highlight our cultural heritage, both to visiting tourists and to our fellow citizens.
